Core contrast

〜あいだ expresses what continues throughout a period. 〜あいだに expresses something that happens at some point within that period. This difference is small in form but very important for reading event order.

    During summer vacation, I read Japanese every day.

    The reading continued throughout the whole vacation period.

How to choose

Ask whether the main action fills the whole period or happens once during it. If it fills the whole span, use 〜あいだ. If it occurs once somewhere inside the span, use 〜あいだに.

Reading notes

This pattern helps you map chronology. In reading passages, 〜あいだに often introduces a key event that interrupts or fits inside a larger background situation. 〜あいだ often describes ongoing background itself.

    The rule applies for the entire duration of the meeting.
