Basic family words appear very often in beginner conversation. Learn the plain word and the type of person it refers to, then combine it with simple jobs and descriptions.
わたしの父は医者です。
My father is a doctor.
父 is the plain term used for your own father in a neutral statement.
母は料理が上手です。
My mother is good at cooking.
料理が上手です describes a person’s skill.
兄は大学生です。
My older brother is a university student.
