What が marks

The particle が marks the grammatical subject, especially when identifying who or what something is. It often appears after question words and in answers that single out one item.

だれがせんせいですか。

Who is the teacher?

たなかさんがせんせいです。

Tanaka is the teacher.

This answers the question by identifying one person.

あのひとががくせいです。

That person over there is the student.
