Practice reading short explanatory texts by tracking structure, examples, contrast, and conclusion.
Map the paragraph
Explanatory passages often follow a simple shape: claim, example, contrast, and conclusion. Connectors such as たとえば, 一方で, しかし, and つまり tell you where you are in that structure.
オンライン学習には多くの利点がある。たとえば、時間や場所にしばられずに勉強できる。
Online learning has many advantages. For example, you can study without being limited by time or place.
The first sentence states the claim; たとえば gives support.
一方で、一人では集中しにくいという意見もある。
On the other hand, some people say that it is hard to stay focused alone.
一方で introduces the competing opinion or counterpoint.
