朝、あやは音楽室の前でみかを待っていました。

In the morning, Aya was waiting for Mika in front of the music room.

今日は合唱の練習の前に、椅子を並べる当番です。

Today, before chorus practice, they are on duty to line up the chairs.

音楽室のドアを開けると、広い部屋にまだだれもいませんでした。

When they opened the music room door, there was still no one in the wide room.

窓から朝の光が入って、ピアノの上が明るく見えます。

部屋の後ろには、重ねてある椅子がたくさんありました。

あやは「まず前の方から並べよう」と言いました。

みかは床のテープを見て、「この線にそろえるんだね」と言います。

二人は一つずつ椅子を持って、前の列から置いていきました。

The two of them carried the chairs one by one and placed them starting from the front row.

でも、いくつかの椅子は向きが違っていました。

But some of the chairs were facing the wrong way.

あやは足の向きを見ながら、まっすぐになるように直します。

みかは「一列に六つずつでいいかな」と聞きました。

途中で窓が少し開いて、楽譜が一枚床に落ちました。

みかはすぐにその楽譜を拾って、ピアノの横に置きました。

Mika immediately picked up that sheet of music and put it beside the piano.

楽譜には、今日歌う歌の名前が書いてありました。

On the sheet music, the name of the song to sing today was written.

あやは椅子の数をもう一度数えて、足りないことに気づきます。

Aya counted the number of chairs one more time and notices that they are not enough.

部屋の隅に、小さい椅子が二つ残っていました。

In the corner of the room, two small chairs were left over.

でも、それは低いので、別の部屋から同じ高さの椅子を持ってきます。

But because those are low, they bring chairs of the same height from another room.

先生が来たとき、椅子はきれいに並んでいました。

When the teacher came, the chairs were lined up neatly.

先生は「見やすい並べ方ですね」と言ってくれました。

The teacher said, “This is an easy-to-see way of arranging them.”

あやとみかは少し汗をふきながら、顔を見合わせて笑いました。

While wiping a little sweat, Aya and Mika looked at each other and laughed.

練習が始まる前に、二人は後ろの席に座って部屋を見ました。

Before practice began, the two of them sat in seats in the back and looked at the room.

きれいにそろった椅子を見ると、今日の歌もきっときれいに聞こえると思いました。

Seeing the neatly aligned chairs, Aya thought that today's song would surely sound beautiful too.
