What to expect at N4

N4 stories add more natural phrasing and longer ideas while keeping the reading flow manageable.

A practical way to read at N4

Read in short scenes

Work through a few connected sentences before checking details. At N4, meaning often develops across a reply, a reason, or a change of plan rather than inside one sentence alone.

Notice how ideas connect

Pay attention to forms such as から, ので, けど, and たり. They tell you whether the speaker is giving a reason, adding contrast, or grouping actions even when some vocabulary is unfamiliar.

Reread for smoother recognition

After finishing, reread one paragraph without opening the dictionary. The goal is not perfect recall; it is noticing that grammar and words which felt slow on the first pass now arrive more quickly.
